A simple Box Lantern is all you need

Many clients like to select a fixture and say – this is what I want. But the most distinctive elements on a project  are usually designed with effort and thought. The Team at ADG Lighting designs lighting fixtures to work with the architectural space.

A simple box light says it all. The elements used to make each box’s simple shape is crucial. A lantern can be made from angle iron. Brass lanterns can be made from sheet or angle stock. there are different scales to each lantern.  Zinc lanterns are typically made from steel sheet that’s galvanized and dipped and then Zinc coated.tavi box lights ADG_01

Light fixtures are personal and can be made to order. A quick modified sketch will enhance and create any fixture from Architectural Detail Group. Client’s can expect full scale shop drawings for homes, hotels and commercial lightning projects.

A Spotlight of a Different Kind

While our daily work focuses on creating custom lighting and furnishings for our clients, we thought we’d take a different approach today, and create a different sort of spotlight if you will.

Today, we’ll focus our attention on those who make it happen everyday: the talent here at ADG.

At times we all review and look at lighting as an item you pluck off the shelf. At times we look at furniture as that item that you see when you walk into the showroom. It is selected, spec’d, and delivered to the customer, and we wait for the relaxed and wonderful smile that comes from the customer’s amazement.

“Wow, my design professional helped with that selection and it looks wonderful!” she says. However, what happens when the specialty side for designers, homeowners and hoteliers alike is customized? Teams like Architectural Detail Group and ADG Lighting take the pen and calipers in hand and begin the design process — because they hold the control with the fabrication that makes the process extra special.

What about the leap of faith to custom design and manufactured lighting and architectural furnishings? We all know the design studio of Charles and Ray Eames and furniture by the iconic Mies van der Rohe.

If you’ve seen the lighting and ornament work by Gerald Olesker and his team at ADG Eco Lighting, you know it is a sight to see. Many have likened their work to the works of Edward F. Caldwell & Co.

Here at ADG, we take pride in our work and craftsmanship. Our significant designs and inspired collections are developed from Olesker working with some of the finest and most prominent architects, designers and building owners around the globe. His works have been placed into homes designed by Marc Appleton, Gwathmey Siegel, and Robert Stern’s office.

Inspired by Michael Berman, Olesker got into the metal furniture industry when Michael suggested to Gerald that he make the MBL Shearboun table for himself. Olesker then began to fulfill orders for Berman and other designers in town for metal furniture. Each fixture and piece of furniture initially comes in a form developed by Olesker within a specific scope for the project. Certainly while designs are repeated, many of the original inspirations remain some of the most published and seen homes and projects today.

Diversity is key component of Olesker’s work. The above chandelier was a requested piece, developed for a homeowner and her prominent husband in the banking industry. Read up on what ADG customers have had to say about our work, and you’ll begin to see why Olesker and ADG are sought after in the industry.

The below modern fixture was developed for a hospital in New Orleans. Joey Genarro, the industrial designer in charge of production at ADG, developed this fixture. It is quite the hit! ADG Lighting has had many orders for this and variations of this fixture. Eight phases of the hospital currently display this timeless piece.

Contrasting designs and fixtures are key to the successful following and modest studio approach by Olesker and Genarro. The Mid Century Mixx above and the classical iron light and copper lantern are additional examples of the pairings by ADG Lighting.

According to Historic New England Organization the First Period (Post-Medieval English): 1600-1700. Those projects built during the first generation of settlement by English colonists, First Period architecture owes much of its appearance to building traditions from Europe. It could be argued that houses from this period are without style; they were not designed by architects. Yet several common elements mark these structures and two distinct traditions developed (northern and southern) with corresponding similarities of form and appearance. Each of these traditions took advantage of materials at hand as well as architectural features suited to their respective climates.

In New England, colonists departed from traditional European wattle and daub (woven lattice of wooden strips covered with a material……… http://www.historicnewengland.org/preservation/your-older-or-historic-home/architectural-style-guide

A Design Style unmatched by many. Virgil McDowell Craftsman, Artisan, educated is deemed by many a secret weapon in architectural styling.

According to my Good friend Virgil McDowell (project pictured above) his design approach brings careful attention to historical precedents or classical detail essential to graceful, well proportioned homes, whether in the eloquent symmetry of the Georgian facade, the Grand style of a Palladian Manner or the simplicity and restraint of a European farmhouse.

Many of these designs feature handcrafted limestone and custom ironwork. He also enjoy using older, traditional materials such as slate, antique heart-of-pine floors and unique architectural antique doors, floor tiles, and hand carved stone reliefs.

Part of Virgil’s expertise includes old world techniques of watercolor rendering similar to those taught at L’Ecole des Beaux Arts in Paris, pencil rendering, both in perspective and evaluation, and quick sketch marker techniques, which enhance the communication process. Virgil will also depict his  strong background in the classical orders, proportion systems both exterior and interior and site/garden axial planning use by traditional architects of the past.

.Details · Details · Details

Fluent in all periods, styles and vernaculars. Virgil McDowell will take great interest in the design and planning of paneled rooms and other related case goods. The design process is collaborative with each client, inspired by and responsive to their specific desires, needs, program and budget.

For those of you that read articles about sustainable or eco lighting companies, and peruse the pages of magazines like Period Homes and Traditional building, there are a few myths to dispel.  Eco does not mean screw in an LED light bulb or put in a compact fluorescent bulb. And many of the companies in “Green sections” call themselves Green but are merely selling a component of green.

Companies like Architectural Detail Group, Inc and ADG Eco Lighting embrace the process of manufacturing products and the impact those products have on the earth. ADG does not have a LEED building, or count the carbon molecules as offset. the Founders and teams at ADG do practice and strive to continually get the message across that sustainability is a mind set.  Gerald Olesker, ceo and founder, is consistently insuring that scrap is at its lowest level in the shop, while his teams also are effective at processing. Sr. Designer and factory management run by Joey Gennaro, looks at processes like water jet and laser cutting to next products and reduce waste as well as free up man power.

Efficiency with sustainability seems to be a buzz these days, but the question is were teh early settlers in the west efficient. By definition yes, but by practical means, no. ADG takes a similar mind set. What it takes to be a Green Entrepreneur is shear will-power and determination. Green Entrepreneur, Gerald Olesker looks at the goal and incredibly insures that the client’s needs will be met as well as vendors and ADG Team members.
