Tiny homes are certainly rising in popularity. One of the most successful organizations providing tiny houses as permanent and transitional housing for our unhoused veterans is the Veterans Community Project (VCP) in Kansas City, Missouri. The VCP was founded in Kansas City, Missouri, by combat veterans. This organization constructs villages of tiny homes to provide housing for homeless veterans.
The Veterans Community Project is so successful that other locations have sprung up in Longmont, Colorado; St. Louis, Missouri; Sioux Falls, South Dakota; Oklahoma City, Oklahoma; Milwaukee, Wisconsin; and Glendale, Arizona. These wonderful combat veterans know how to treat their own. Each tiny home comes furnished and is pet-friendly but most importantly offers a secure and safe environment.
Our homeless veterans who become residents also receive support services which include health and wellness programs, education, employment help, and education in financial literacy. The VCP is a thorough program aimed at helping homeless veterans for a successful transition into a permanent and stable home–something to be proud of. Other partnerships that help with the Veterans Community Project include The Coca Cola Foundation, Burns McDonnell and Veterans United, just to name a few out of many that help in this important cause.
VCP also collaborates with local housing authorities, landlords and other providers to help veterans find sustainable permanent housing options when they are ready to transition into permanent housing.
The most impressive detail about the Veterans Community Project is their outcomes and success rates. According to the VCP reports and data collected, approximately 85% of the unhoused veterans who participated in the program successfully transitioned to permanent housing. This success rate is attributed to both the safe stable housing and support services provided–which deals with the root causes of homelessness.
Other organizations involved in helping our unhoused veterans include: Veterans Village, Tiny Vet Homes, Operation Tiny Home, just to name a few.
