Las Vegas is known for its glitz and glamour, bright lights, over-the-top nightlife, casinos, and gambling. But in architecture, Las Vegas builders go all out and become sticklers for detail, thus creating the most accurate replicas. Here are some little-known facts about some of the architecture in Las Vegas.
Let’s make our first stop at The Venetian Resort, which is so close to the real thing that people call this Venetian Resort in Las Vegas a marvel of replication. The lifelike replica of St. Mark’s Square features cobblestone paths complete with street performers, and get this – there is a replica of the Campanile! (the bell tower of St. Mark’s Basilica)
The builders have meticulously recreated Venice, Italy, including replicas of the Rialto Bridge and St. Mark’s Campanile, complete with canals and gondolas.
Let’s talk about the Gondola rides. The Venetian offers an authentic experience with its gondola rides. First, they wind indoors and outdoors all through the resort. The gondoliers all sing traditional romantic Italian songs, which adds to the excitement and authenticity of the experience.
This architecture has frescoes inspired by its Venice originals, which Italian artists painted for added authenticity. Oops, we almost forgot to mention the ceiling painted to mimic the sky, creating an outdoor heavenly feel.
Our next stop is the Luxor Hotel & Casino, another wonder. Its pyramid shape is not just for show or marketing purposes; it actually aligns with the cardinal directions, mimicking ancient Egyptian pyramids. The Luxor’s interior is a structural engineering marvel. This elevator is known as an inclinator because it travels at a 39-degree angle along the sides of the pyramid. All of these features were necessary because of the pyramid’s shape.
The atrium of Luxor Hotel & Casino is one of the largest in the world, at 29 million cubic feet. It has been said that the Statue of Liberty, minus its pedestal, could fit inside the Luxor’s atrium.
Another interesting fact about the Luxor Hotel & Casino is its paranormal reputation. Yes, that’s right, folks. The Luxor is haunted. There have been numerous ghost sightings and other unexplained happenings. Some people attribute these hauntings to its unique shape and tragic occurrences during its construction.
We hope your interest has been piqued enough for you to visit Las Vegas and see these features—but maybe not the ghosts!
