There comes a time in life when one might decide to undergo a facelift or total body makeover; we often see this for those in the public eye. Well, it seems the La Brea Tar Pits is taking that leap of self-improvement, and going for a total makeover!
The architects who are designing the new look are the award-winning team of Marion Weiss and Michael Manfredi, representing Weiss/Manfredi, a New York City-based architectural firm. This multidisciplinary design firm has made quite an impression by winning many national competitions of design, including The American Academy of Arts and Letter Award for Architecture; Architectural League Emerging Voices Award; New York AIA Gold Medal of Honor Award; New York AIA President’s Award, and the Cooper-Hewitt National Design Award for Architectural Design, just to name a few.
Their plan won the big honors of redesigning the La Brea Tar Pits as we know it. According to Lalist.com, “This plan, called Loops and Lenses, links adjacent Hancock Park to the Page Museum with a triple mobius walkway, creating three ‘loops.’” Each loop will have a unique theme, “meant to bridge the prehistoric past into the present and the future.” Lalist.com goes on to say, “The ‘lenses’ are the views throughout the park, which draw together research and the museum collection.”
Currently, the plan that Weiss/Manfredi have created has a pair of bridges that will go above the Lake Pit, which means those huge prehistoric statues will stay in their original area. There is an alternate plan to have those prehistoric statues removed and make their new home inside the museum with their own exhibit.
Either way, the expected outcome will be monumental and will undoubtedly impact many future generations of museum aficionados. For more details and pictures of the plan, here is a link that you will surely enjoy.
