“Real wealth is ideas plus energy.” — R. Buckminster Fuller
Buckminster Fuller was an American architect, theorist, author, designer, inventor, and futurist. You could say his creativity knew no bounds. Buckminster Fuller was born Richard Buckminster Fuller on July 12, 1895, in Milton, Massachusetts; he died 88 years later on July 1, 1983, in Los Angeles.
He was a true visionary, and the way he looked at things was truly remarkable. He invented many architectural designs that had never been done before. Many diehard architectural enthusiasts know his name as synonymous with the geodesic dome at the 1967 World’s Fair in Montreal, Canada.
Buckminster Fuller was the actual inventor of the geodesic dome. This structure was the lightest yet strongest and most cost-effective design that was ever created. He also had a strong humanitarian heart, which influenced his creations. Many decades later, his designs were examined as a possible solution to global homelessness issues.
He wrote over 30 books and was indeed a genius. In 1933, he showed the world a prototype of a car he designed called the Dymaxion car, where he incorporated the engineering technology of an airplane. This car would hold 12 people and go 120 miles an hour and use half the gas of a standard car. Unfortunately, when he was demonstrating how it worked to a few investors, it crashed, killing one person. Later, it was determined that it was human error and not the fault of anything with the car itself. He never got adequate funding for the vehicle.
After serving in World War II, Fuller became president of Mensa from 1974 until his death in 1983. He was expelled from Harvard and went to work at a mill in Canada, where he casually modified and improved the manufacturing machines.
If Buckminster Fuller were alive today, no doubt he would be working on the launch of the rocket to Mars.
