The magnificence and charm of Michigan architecture are encased in the Fisher Building, an architectural marvel nestled in the heart of Detroit, Michigan. Its impressive stature and golden tower proudly represent Michigan’s rich history and ambitious spirit.
In 1928, three enterprising brothers – Fred, Charles, and William Fisher – commissioned Michigan architect Albert Kahn to construct an office space that reflected their booming automotive business, the Fisher Body Corporation. The result is the awe-inspiring design and innovative architecture of the Fisher Building.
The Fisher Building is a true testament to the opulence of the Roaring Twenties. This towering 30-story building has a breathtaking three-story gold-leaf-covered peak, making it one of the tallest buildings in Detroit and a distinguished icon of Michigan architecture.
Walk into the Fisher Building, and it’s like stepping into an Art Deco symphony, showcasing the craftsmanship of Michigan architecture in every detail. Its ceilings are adorned with hand-painted frescoes, while solid brass and Italian marble embellishments will transport you into a bygone era. The facade is made of over 325,000 square feet of granite and over 40 types of marble from around the world, adding to its grandiosity.
The Fisher Building’s allure doesn’t stop at its architectural beauty; it has a Broadway-style theater, the Fisher Theatre, with seating for over two thousand people and is a hotspot for cultural events and activities. This building plays host to numerous Broadway hits, thus making it a hub for Detroit’s emerging artistic community.
The Fisher Building also represents Michigan’s enduring resilience, having survived devastating economic turmoil. Yet, Detroit rose from the ashes, and the Fisher Building remained steadfast through it all.
The main takeaway is that the Fisher Building is more than just a structure – it epitomizes the heart and soul of its people, complete with their resiliency and sense of community, and let’s not forget the Detroit spirit only known to those passionate about Detroit, Michigan. On that note, anyone up for some Motown?
