It is not a secret that we’re going through many changes in pursuit of creating a better and efficient world for all to benefit from. Let’s talk about the benefits that smart cities would provide.
- Great infrastructure, which includes adequate water supply
- Guaranteed electricity supply
- Sanitation, which includes solid waste management
- Efficient urban mobility and public transportation
- Sustainable environment
- Affordable housing for all, including the poor
- Citizen participation governance
- Excellent safety and protection of its citizens
- Excellent health and education services for all, including the elderly
At the top of the list above should be robust IT connectivity and digitalization.
We are saying that robust IT connectivity is at the top of the list because that is how one becomes a smart city. Since communication and valuable up-to-the-minute information are part of the solution, our IT services must be robust. Another interesting element named was data-based decision making, which would entail gathering individual data and categorizing it into separate categories.
The categories would be used to understand diversity among people in various stages of life. Broadly speaking, these categories would include liveability, economic viability, and sustainability. Smart cities would have all three categories to thrive, but depending on what stage of life you’re in, the needs for that category will be different. To keep up with change, the data collection would have to be up-to-the-minute to create the perfect smart city.
For example, if you are elderly, the need for healthcare services will be at the top of the list, so in creating a smart city, a specific area with specific healthcare for elderly people would be prioritized.
London is one of the top smart cities, and they use their robust IT connectivity to run their transportation, making it quite efficient. In fact, everything runs like clockwork. Did we mention that there are, as of November 2020, there are 5.2 million surveillance cameras throughout London? In fact, many smart cities have cameras. Kinda big brother-ish, don’t you think?
