Contrary to popular beliefs, female designers aren’t just limited to fashion. Working in several mediums is just one of the reasons why we are starting off Women’s History Month with Ray Eames as our top pick for female designers. She certainly is one of the best female designers, and we are merely calling Ray Eames our top pick for this category. Here is how our office at ADG Lighting & Architectural Detail Group came to this decision. We believe that you, as our reader, will agree.
Ray Eames was a pioneer in many mediums. Her Wikipedia page has her occupation as an artist, designer, and filmmaker. But that’s not why she made our top pick for female designers, although that alone would certainly qualify her for the honor.
In fact, Reebok has a current collaboration with the renowned Eames Office on two pairs of shoes, the “Dot Pattern” and “Composition” Club C colorways, inspired by designs and paintings from Ray Eames from the 1930s-40s.
Gerald Olesker, who’s owner and CEO of ADG Lighting, has a huge heart for women and believes in giving credit where credit is due. So with that in mind, the obvious choice was Ray Eames.
You see, Ray’s husband, Charles Ormond Eames, was the face of their successful company, but it mainly was Ray’s creativity in the partnership with Charles. Ray’s creativity significantly impacted modern architecture and furniture designs today. Ray was behind the scenes and was never given the deserved credit or acknowledgment.
Ray’s contributions include architecture graphic design work in designing textiles, film, and furniture. We aren’t saying that Charles didn’t play a significant role in the partnership because they wouldn’t have lasted as a couple if he didn’t contribute.
We have found that when two people are working together successfully, one might come up with an idea, but the inspiration happens when they are together. So it is fair to say that one is creative and the other is the muse.
Yes, husbands can be muses, and this is why she is our top pick for the female designer.
