Spread the Word

When we think of influential architects, we usually think of the buildings they designed that stand as a constant reminder of their formidable talent. Most, if not all, of these architects were trailblazers. But did you know that some of the most expensive current modern furniture was inspired by the architects of yesteryear?

That’s right, furniture design by architects is a thing, and the first one that comes to mind is Ludwig Miles van der Rohe, a German-American architect. His contribution to furniture design was the Barcelona Chair, created in 1929. He believed that less is more, which stands true today for those who praise the modern minimalist look in furniture and design. Even the knock-offs carry a hefty price tag!

The great American architect Frank Lloyd Wright also instilled his philosophy of “harmony with humanity and environment” into his furniture design. Wright drew his inspiration from the clarity of Japanese design, and wood was his choice of material. When you think about his philosophy being harmony, humanity, and environment, wood is a perfect choice. His early furniture design pieces were made of heavy oak and very formal; he experimented with sleeker designs as time went on. If you look at your own furniture or that of your family’s, you just might see a piece inspired by Mr. Wright.

Arne Jacobsen was a Danish architect whose furniture design was sheer genius. He developed the Egg Chair, and it’s still around today. The comfort of these chairs is supposed to be phenomenal.

Now, remember how we said that ADG Lighting owner and CEO Gerald Olesker has a degree in architecture, which sets him apart from the rest? Well, he also designs and manufactures one-of-a-kind pieces. He is kind of a throwback to the architects of yesteryear. He manufactures right here in the great United States of America, or Agoura Hills, California, for all you locals.

Gerald has been creating custom furniture and lighting for some of the world’s most famous athletes, entertainers, hotels, and restaurants.
