California Drought Influencing Architectural Design

Mother Nature’s Influences

Much of our design inspiration comes from what surrounds us. The forces of nature are no different. They have influenced and inspired design for centuries. Every aspect of our of our architecture reflects the environment we live in. What works in an North American environment may not be suitable for the deserts of the Middle East. With the California drought surpassing its fifth year, we see architects being inspired by the local environment more than ever before. Their vision is now taking into consideration every area of our living space that could be impacted by a prolonged drought season and the future potential of drought events. California design professionals have always incorporated a higher level of environmental impact in their design, but now, these influences are taking a front seat in the design inspiration.

Considering Conservation in California

A recently awarded project in downtown Los Angeles reflects the influences of the drought in a sprawling modern landscape. The project is called FAB Park and is envisioned as a water-conscious plaza in the heart of downtown. The designers were inspired by the needs of Angelenos to conserve water in a prolonged drought environment and the demands of the ever expanding urban sprawl. The project will take advantage of elements that are vibrant in lower water conditions, but provide significant shading and comfort to the people enjoying the park environment. To supplement this lush shady environment, a state of the art storm water capture system will be implemented to capture and reuse water in the most efficient manner possible. The space will also engage solar panels in the design to provide power for lighting and other mechanical operations of the park, along with a restaurant space that will call the park home.

Environmental Inspiration Captures Our Future

Moving forward, the impact of environmental impacts on architecture and design will be at the forefront in California. Fortunately, architects and designers working in California have consistently considered conservation and green efforts into their designs. The drought will now become a driving force in their creativity.

Make sure when you are partnering with an architecture or design firm, you are finding the right partner who embraces environmental considerations in their work. ADG Lighting has always considered these influences in our creative processes. Visit us at www.adglighting.com and learn how we can bring your inspiration to life. Custom High End Homes Get the ADG Touch Again 20 Years Later

Starting Over At the Beginning

Isn’t it funny sometimes how life repeats itself and things come full circle? Twenty years ago, Gerald Olesker began a trend in lighting fixture design and manufacturing. Some of the projects he was a part of include working with Rios and Associates in Bel Air Crest, for a anonymous philanthropist and with Michael Berman on the Marciano home (founder of Guess Jeans) on Kip Drive. He also had the opportunity to work with Sandy Gooch (founder of Los Angeles based Mrs. Gooch’s specialty chain of health food stores bought by Whole Foods) on a spec house in Mulholland Estates.

Updating the Creative Design

Now, twenty years later, many of these properties have changed ownership and the new occupants are inviting us to provide new lighting creations for the property, to reflect their individual style and taste. Because of the high quality design and construction of those fabulous designs from twenty years ago, the current property owners are demanding that we repurpose or find new homes for those iconic pieces. They are surprised at how the work from twenty years ago has retained an extremely high market value and are in high demand for placement in other homes.

Relating to the Geography

Bel Air Crest- Strategically located in between Los Angeles and the San Fernando Valley off the 405 Freeway off Sepulveda Boulevard. With approximately 200+ homes this resort style community has amazingly beautiful landscaped common areas and streets, an amazing clubhouse with enormous pool & entertainment areas, four tennis courts, basketball court and putting greens.

Prices ranging from about $1.5 million for the townhouse homes to $20 million for one of the larger custom homes.

Mulholland Estates is a guard gated community in the Beverly Hills.  The entrance to the community is located on the north side of Mulholland drive, between Beverly Glen and Benedict Canyon. A very attractive feature of Mulholland Estates for its residents is the high level of security offered to the community. This feature is highly sought after with high profile celebrities and business leaders alike.

The homes in Mulholland Estates range between 6,000 square feet and 12,000 square feet. Most homes were constructed in the 1990’s. Home in the Mulholland Estates, generally selling from $5,500,000 to $8,000,000.  Some of these prestigious residences do come up for lease, with monthly rental rates ranging between $25,000 per month up to $40,000+ per month.

Celebrating Summer

Make the Moments Count

Something changes in our lives when summer season is upon us. The warmer weather brings us out of our hibernation into the natural beauty of summer. Our life changes because of the season. We’re naturally attracted to be outdoors into the warmer weather. Our social schedule adjusts accordingly and we gravitate towards spending time outdoors with friends and family. Whether it’s trips to the beach, the mountains or our favorite amusement parks, we just enjoy being with others during this season. A recent survey showed that people’s perception of color change during the summer season. The way our eyes perceives and interprets the color spectrum change with the season. The grass looks greener, the water looks bluer and the sunshine is just a bit brighter. Those interpretations of color during summer change our behavior.

Creating the Perfect Summer Environment

Summer should bring a change to your living spaces. The way we use our entertaining and living spaces tend to “open up” during the summer. Open the windows and doors to bring in the natural lighting. Those windows allow the beauty of nature to flow into our homes and energize the space. Our living spaces tend to open up into the outdoor spaces that create a natural flow into the home. Entertaining has never been better when the flow of the home naturally opens up and flows into outdoor spaces. Understanding the way we interpret the light during summer significantly changes the way we interpret and enjoy the feeling of our living spaces.

ADG Understands Summer Inspiration

With summer upon us, isn’t it time to take advantage of the inspiration of summer? ADG understands the creative inspiration of the change in season. Summer is about light and the effect of light on your living space. Let us work with your inspiration and collaborate on ways to bring your dreams to life. Our expertise allows us to guide you through a project that will exceed your every expectation. Visit us at www.adglighting.com and learn how we can make your dreams come to life.
